Hats are Fab! Add a Needlepoint Hat Band

Travel is fun. Sometimes it brings new creative ideas and other times it reinforces your own. On my recent trip to France, I was delighted to see that dressy summer hats were IN, and what was I working on but the two remaining hat bands shown in my recent blog.

I put the American Indian floral design on a hat for my 3-year-old granddaughter. The hat band was longer than needed so I overlapped the ends when sewing it on the hat. That way, as she grows I can change the band to a larger hat. This design makes me think of weddings. Imagine a summer wedding with bridesmaids and flower girls in straw hats with floral needlepoint hat bands!

The Hawaiian Shark Tooth tattoo custom needlepoint hat band went onto an adult straw western hat. The band was a little smaller than the large hat so I made an adjustable button closure with braided thread to match as shown in the detail below.

Cool Irish Wedding Pillow Needlepoint Design

Wedding gift ideas are so hard to come up with, especially when a registry has already been bought out!

Well, even if the registry is still open, I’m sure that if the couple is Irish, then an Irish Wedding Needlepoint Pillow will be their favorite gift they receive.

The idea is pretty simple; make this design into a ring bearer pillow.  Or stitch a full size needlepoint pillow for their home.

We’ll put their last name on top and below it features two Celtic knots and the Claddagh ring.

Hunting and Fly Fishing Needlepoint Belts

We’ve done a few flies on custom needlepoint belts recently, but per request we finally created a dedicated fly fishing needlepoint belt design.

This design features a lot of color variations of clouser minnow flies and a fly rod.

We started a great collation of dog needlepoint canvas designs about a year ago, and I just wanted to show off a photo of a golden retriever needlepoint canvas we made last week!

How to Measure a Needlepoint Belt

We’ve really had a great time designing needlepoint belts this year.  One request we keep sending out is to show people how to measure a needlepoint belt.

I figured that we may as well write a blog post about this, so more people who are searching can learn how to measure a belt.

Actually, this was a mystery for me for a long time, as some companies belt sizes seem to vary from others, and I never understood why.

Basically, the key to figuring out a belt size, is to measure from the end of the belt (not the belt buckle – see left side marked A) to the center hole (see  right side marked B).  Click on the image below to see it more clearly.

This explains why some companies with longer metal buckles would have differences from belt size to belt size.

If you are stitching a custom needlepoint belt canvas and having it finished with leather belt ends, you’ll also want to know how much to stitch.

With our leather belt ends, you can calculate this by subtracting 8 inches from the belt size.  This is what we refer to as the visible area.  Then from here, we add two extra inches of background color to each side (the belt buckle will cover up this area).

Also, I’ve been going back and forth with finishers on a rolled edge vs using a binding stitch.  We have found a finisher who does not charge extra for doing a rolled edge, so it is a matter of preference.

If you prefer the rolled edge, then you will need to stitch two extra rows above and below the design, so the finisher can wrap the canvas under.

Dress up Your Old Straw Hat — Add a Needlepoint Hat Band

Tired of your old straw hat? When I went looking for a new straw visor there were none to be found.

Inspired by a book I was reading on Hawaiian tattoos, I designed a hat band of a traditional shark tooth design. It is a perfect design for Trianglepiont, which is quick and easy to to.  I mocked up a custom needlepoint design and was stitching 2 days later!

Each shark tooth is a trianglepoint and  satin stitch is used between the triangles. I finished the ends of the canvas with the reversed mosaic stitch as shown here.

There is a single row of the Continental stitch along each end to serve as the border for the finished overcast edge, which is described in my Needlepoint Napkin Rings blog. For the backing, I used wide bias tape which had to be trimmed down to the 1.25 inch width of this hat band.

I tacked the band to my old visor so it can be removed easily and exchange for my next project — an Hawaiian flower band which is on the stretcher waiting to be stitched.

Summer Fun Custom Needlepoint Hat Bands!

Peggy has been looking for projects to start this summer and decided to design some hat bands.

Two of these designs are inspired by Hawaiian tattoos and the other is a fun floral pattern.

She mentioned she designed the red one to do with triangle stitches, so stay tuned, I think she is going to work her magic!

They are 23 inches wide and if you are interested they run $45 per design, or $115 for all three!
